Beyond Boundaries
Oregon Parks & Recreation
With over 250 state parks, Oregon is a natural treasure for all to enjoy – yet significant barriers limit access for underserved communities. Oregon Parks & Recreation Department (OPRD) collaborated with RDG Brands to help understand why.
Bridging The Gap For Underserved Communities
Natural Wonders For All
RDG Brands and OPRD combined forces to create the 2023 report “Beyond Boundaries: Bridging The Gap To Underserved Communities.” The report sheds light upon the complexities of accessibility and inclusivity among Oregon State Parks.
Making the Outdoors More Accessible
RDG Brands and OPRD combined forces to create the 2023 report “Beyond Boundaries: Bridging The Gap To Underserved Communities.” The report sheds light upon the complexities of accessibility and inclusivity among Oregon State Parks. Underserved communities including diverse groups like low-income, rural, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, immigrants/refugees, and individuals with disabilities, face barriers to accessing State Parks. These hurdles encompass social, economic, and structural challenges. RDG conducted an in-depth examination consisting of comprehensive research, extensive literature review, stakeholder interviews, community surveys, and data analysis. The report aimed to provide guidance on how to create a more welcoming, accessible, and enjoyable environment for everyone.
Book Design
RDG took OPRD’s report findings and brought the information to life with a well-designed and polished booklet. Through visual language, the booklet maintains the OPRD’s brand with a consistent layout and color scheme, arranged in clear sections for easy navigation. Intentional fonts were selected to ensure accessibility and easy reading. Infographics were developed to help share meaningful data in an engaging and visual way.
A Badge Of Honor
RDG was honored to be the agency of record to create a custom new primary logo for this report and help visually portray a large idea within a single icon. In recognition of the uniforms donned by state park rangers and outdoor scouts alike, a badge icon was selected and the first four concepts were created. RDG had a deep understanding that the design of this badge needed to help convey a particularly sensitive topic in a way that was approachable and easy to understand. The badge design is inspired by different destinations throughout Oregon, including Haystack Rock and Mt. Bachelor. The picnic table was selected as a symbol of inclusivity and accessibility, where everyone is invited to the table to experience the beauty of Oregon’s State Parks, together.
Custom Illustrations
RDG crafted custom illustrations for OPRD, which included iconographic badges for content navigation. Referencing the beauty of Oregon’s State Parks, custom illustrations helped depict diverse outdoor activities against the backdrop of the state’s landscapes. Continuing the visual narrative, the finished product featured strategic iconography, including section badges and header icons, aiding organizational clarity and providing a visually appealing and informative resource for stakeholders and the public.
Research & Reporting
In the comprehensive report, RDG orchestrated 20 interviews—both in person and virtual—employing a guided questionnaire to discern barriers across demographics. By engaging with diverse community representatives and integrating qualitative interviews, quantitative analysis, and external research, the report offers actionable insights for enhancing inclusivity in Oregon State Parks. Through direct collaboration with various organizations, RDG ensured an authentic understanding of community experiences and barriers, providing policymakers and stakeholders with valuable input for fostering inclusivity in the state’s parks.
